NEW Year’s RESOLUTIONS—Part 2

Last month we talked about New Year’s Resolutions, and how they should be more focused on God and our relationship with Him.  But how do we actually do that?  Here are some suggestions.

See thee more clearly

* By reading and studying His Word in the Bible, we can gain a better insight into Him and what He wants for us.

* There is no substitute for talking with someone to get to know him or her.  This is especially true of God.  Prayer is our way of communicating with God.  Just talk with Him.

Love thee more dearly

* John 14:14 says, “If you love me, keep my commands.”

* His commands are to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” and to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mat. 22:38-39)  Jesus also told us, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”  (Mat. 25:40).

* Some examples are:“I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (Matthew 25:34-36)  We should be able to extrapolate these examples into our daily lives.

Follow thee more nearly

* The Bible says His followers are to “deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

* Does God really want us to give everything away and follow Christ—literally?  Or perhaps it is more about what our priorities are.

This brings us back to the beginning of this discussion started last month.  Where is our focus?  God wants us to love Him, to trust and rely on Him.  But if we love God, as the discussion of loving God above shows, we can best express that by loving one another.  Happy New Year—pass it on!
